Final Exam VS Final Year Project (FYP)

Good luck for everyone!!

Buat final year student Engineering macam aku ni, selain final exam, ada lagi benda lain yang perlu difikirkan iaitu Final Year Project (FYP) ataupun tesis.

My FYP’s topic is “Analyzing Flow Past a Lighter-Than-Air Vehicle”, it’s a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) method of analyzing flow through an airship using CFD software, FLUENT. I have to learn FLUENT using manuals and tutorials provided by my supervisor, Prof Waqar Asrar and from the internet. FLUENT is use with GAMBIT, another CFD software. GAMBIT is a LINUX application, so I have to find X-server to enable GAMBIT to run in Windows. That’s the first obstacle I encountered. I got stuck learning the modules from the manuals, so I went to see Sis Hanan many times. Then finally, I realized that the manuals that I am using is a little bit different from the one available in the internet after some problems occurred. In short, actually I am following the wrong step by step, aghhhhhhhhhhh!!! But now, Alhamdulillah, I managed to do flow past a 2D airfoil of NACA 0012, a symmetric airfoil.

Flow over NACA 0012
Free stream velocity: 50m/s
Laminar flow, incompressible with Mach number around 0.15
Angle of attack: 1.2 degrees
Reynolds number:
Assume standard sea level values for free stream properties.

Generation of grid and mesh in GAMBIT.

Grid display in FLUENT

Iteration of NACA0012 for 1000 iterations

Velocity contours coloured by velocity magnitudes

Contours of pressure coefficients, Cp.

Disclaimer: This data can be understood by Aerospace students only.
So after this, I have to model on airship done by Zaimi.
